The Land of Opportunity

by Jason Reed
The dawn of the petroleum age in the 19th century was sparked by the need to fuel an increasingly illuminated world. Crude, or rock oil as it was first known, was a leap of faith toward a new source of energy.

This risograph zine looks at the oil industry in West Texas through archival pictures, contemporary landscape photographs, and documentation of detritus strewn along the highways that bisect the endless oilfields.

An expanded version of this project is in the works: The Land of Impossible Causes
